Well, it's that time; I'm moving into my dorm this Friday and starting classes on Monday. I've already made my own copy of my schedule that's much more pleasing to look at; no Friday classes, though I wish I could have put my mandatory LBST (Liberal Studies - it's not even relevant to my course of study) on Friday to alleviate my Monday class load (seriously, the only option I had for this class was 6:30 - 9:15 P.M. - P TO THE FUCKING M. IN THE EVENING...at least I was able to choose Arts and Society: Music for my first year LBST to make it at least bearable).

Anyways, I'm doing a Mechanical Engineering and Physics double major, two intense and challenging math & science heavy majors that will most likely eat away a good portion of my free time (normally they say students should study 2 hours for every hour of class...for us engineering students they tell us it should be 3 hours of study per hour of class; then, you also have to take into account the out-of-class projects and such for engineering). Hopefully I'll have some time to make some music and whatnot; gaming is going to be a bit of a gray area - the engineering professors and freshman advisors have this "OMG, GAYMS WILL MAKE UR GPA DROP LIEK A BOMB!!!" attitude. I'll see what my overall schedule will be like the first couple weeks and then decide how to allocate my time.

tl;dr - holla at yo college boi, JRob

Nice, I'm moving into my dorm Saturday, classes start Monday, too.

In my freshman year, I had a speech class from like 6-9PM, once a week. It fucking blew, because I was so used to relaxing in the evening. Luckily, the more credit hours you get, the more priority you have in avoiding those kinds of schedules.

First year in college?

Yup.

I followed you because your name is JRob and my name is Rob J.
You are like me from another dimension.
I didn't read this newspost tho that shit is for gays.

How much of a South Park fan are you ?

I've seen every episode (except the two that got removed) up through season 15, the movie, and some of season 16. I don't have any South Park merchandise or games.

So yeah.

I've seen every episde too. Can't wait for South Park to return this Fall, it was supposed to return this spring. I actually heard it might get cancelled after that. All well, that ends well.

Confirmed premiere in 2 days (I think).

weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

NO FUN ALLOWED.

Holy crap it's the middle of September already?! Time flies by like a mutha f*cker.

is ur name fgt?

urs is fgt

what do you think of the latest sp season so far?

meh

It's okay.

have you been granted access to the sugar walls yet?

Shit, dude, I don't even have time just to wank.

oh my god you are the worst user on the bbs

O rly

EDIT: and you're most likely basing this off of a fraction of my posts.

OK MAYBE I WATCH A BIT OF ANIME LOL

Lel

You can't fool me.

enginner and physics, woah! shit just got real.
keep at it mate

Physics: Easy

Engineering: "So this week, you will have to write a 4-7 page, single-spaced, 10pt font paper, do calculations for designing wooden beams that support 300lbs of weight within .07 to .25 inches of deflection, prepare a design package for said wooden beams, build the beams, and don't forget to study 3 hours for every hour you spend in here...what? You need time to do work for your other classes? <sarcasm>What other classes?</sarcasm>"

"Next week you guys will be building a rocket that will safely transport a team of 6 to the ISS. Trust us - it only gets harder."

WAIT, WHAT HAPPENED TO MA1TACHI's ALT??? I DIDN'T DELETE HIS COMMENT???

GUYS???

@jrob the acct got deleted

Well it's deleted now, but when the comments disappeared, I checked to see if the account still existed, and it did. I'm betting what happened was the account was deleted, it was remade, and deleted again.

Or the account was deleted, but your cache wasn't clear.

i wanna be engineer myself :o)

Well, I'd suggest having some idea of what you want to do. The way my college has it set up is they divide the engineering department into three major categories and two levels for each category (and a bunch of miscellaneous categories) - Mechanical (my major), Civil, and Electrical. Each of the three categories has two levels of intensity - there's two levels of engineering, Engineering and Engineering Technology. Engineering is more theory based and less application based, so it's more math-heavy and more difficult than Engineering Technology, which is more application based and doesn't require as high level of math as the standard Engineering level.

Mechanical Engineering deals mostly with energy systems and, of course, machines. As a Mechanical Engineer, you are more likely to work with Electrical Engineers than Civil Engineers as applications of Mechanical Engineering include robotics, automated systems, and nanotechnology. Mechanical Engineering also covers building efficient vehicles, maximizing energy efficiency of pretty much every machine in existence, ranging from AC to industrial machines, being involved in maximizing efficiency of power plants, material testing and efficient implementation of said materials, etc. There's also the design aspect of Mechanical Engineering which involves drafting machine/machine part designs in CAD and use of CAM. The engineer from Team Fortress 2 is pretty much an exaggeration of one aspect of Mechanical Engineering (provided he designed the machines himself) - except for the maintenance of the machines, as that is a mechanic's job.

Civil Engineering is pretty much what it sounds like - it deals with structures (buildings, bridges, and the like). It is NOT construction work - these are the guys who plan out construction projects and oversee construction (basically tell the construction workers what to do). They also oversee safety analysis, ensuring that structures, especially civil (public) structures, meet certain standards - making sure that structural beams can support a couple hundred tons of weight is an example. There is also a design aspect to Civil Engineering; basically, anyone working in the design area of Civil Engineering can expect to work a lot with architects drafting building plans. And like Mechanical Engineering, there is materials testing - testing which materials can support more weight, for example.

Electrical Engineering. Self-explanatory. Deals with circuits, power systems, etc. Like I mentioned before, Mechanical Engineers and Electrical engineers can expect to work together often since the applications of Electrical Engineering also include robotics, automated systems, and nanotechnology. However, Electrical Engineers would be more likely to work with Computer Science/Computer Engineering majors more often than Mechanical Engineers for obvious reasons.
There are other miscellaneous Engineering majors and sub-categories of these three; Aerospace Engineering, which my college does not offer - however, it is a sub-category of Mechanical; Chemical Engineering, which my college also doesn't offer; Nuclear Engineering, which my college offers courses for within the Mechanical department, but does not offer as a major; Computer Engineering or Computer Science, both of which my college offers under the Engineering program; and plenty more (Fire Safety is also one under the Engineering Technology department, oddly).

Usually the engineering department in a university allows you to take the first semester or first year as an undecided engineering "major" before declaring one (one semester for mine before declaring - the first year for certain exceptions like not having Calculus I at the least for the first semester since the first Engineering class has Calculus as a pre- or co-requisite). I'd suggest doing some research on each field of engineering.

One thing you really need to take note of is that there is a lot of effort and work expected of you as an engineer; I find the material easy, but they love to pile assigments and projects on us every week. Another really interesting thing of note is that, ironically, there is more writing in engineering than there is math; we have had to write up 4-7 page, 10pt, proportional-spaced font, single-spaced papers, which is essentially a 10-14 page paper if double-spaced (for reference, the standard paper/report is 3-5 pages double-spaced).

^this isn't as bad as our technical reports, but this is a sample of the amount of typing we have to do for just a couple calculations. There's 3 pages explaining about 15 minutes worth of calculations just to reach five specified voltage drops using a limited number of resistors (220, 330, 2200, 3300, and 10k Ohms 5x each). 1048 words (my English essays average about 700-800 words, 1058 at a maximum) just to explain one circuit board. A technical report of 4-7 pages would have 2000+ words, even approaching 3000, or breaking it. This response is 846 words and is ~3 pages double-spaced, 12pt, Times New Roman font - just a little over one page single-space, 10pt, Arial font (which were the requirements for our technical reports). Expect to type as much as Insanctuary (except your words will actually have meaning and weight...).
I like engineering, and I'm sure you might like it too, but your heart has to be in it, and you have to be ready for all the work.

(This took about 40-50 minutes to type up, btw)

You put a lot of effort into that text, appreciate the peptalk mate. Maty-mate
My goal is to become an Petroleum engineer aka oil engineer. But my plan B is civil as you mentioned.
I live in a country in Norway, so our school systems is slightly different. I do believe becoming an engineer is easier here than America(fuck YEAH!)
Allow Buujack to explain. Your A B C, etc. is equivalent to our 6 5 4. Etc. And you need a certain average to enter a university. As of now, my average is around the amount of 4,4, and the petroleum enginering class is 5.0 in average. so i have little catching up to do. but Civil engineering with a bachelor degree is easier, with merely 4,1 in average.
So i basically have to get better grades in order to achieve my goals.
Good luck to you Jrob!
